The Irenian Empire was the dominant civilization of the pre-Sundering world — a magocratic empire that unified most of the known continent under the rule of the imperial dynasty for over three centuries. It is gone. Its capital was the first thing destroyed on the Night of the Sundering.

What remains is memory, ruin, and the bitter arguments of those who claim to be its heirs.

Character

The Irenian Empire was not a benevolent place, but it was an ordered one. Magic was controlled, categorized, and licensed. The Veilwardens originated as an imperial institution — the bureaucracy that regulated magical practice across the empire. Citizens without magical talent were second-class subjects; cities with significant magic resources were first-class clients of the throne.

It was, depending on who you ask, either:

  • A sophisticated civilization that produced art, architecture, and scholarship unmatched before or since, destroyed by the hubris of one man
  • A system of magical apartheid that exploited the non-magical majority and got exactly what its arrogance deserved

Both things may be true.


What Survives

The Empire is gone as a political entity, but its legacy is everywhere:

Physically:

  • The floating islands of The Skyward Cities are literally pieces of the old empire. Every island is a fragment of Irenia — its farms, its towns, its roads, cut off in mid-air.
  • The Sunken Archive preserves much of the Empire's written record, though access is nearly impossible.
  • Ruins of imperial roads, aqueducts, and fortifications can be found throughout The Deadlands.

Politically:

Culturally:

  • The Irenian calendar is still the basis for most reckoning of time.
  • High Irenian is a dead language of scholarship and ritual.
  • The imperial crest — a sunburst over a mountain — has been adopted, corrupted, and reclaimed by every faction.

The Question of Blame

Every faction in Aethermoor has a theory about why the Sundering happened, and those theories are really theories about whether the Empire deserved to die.

The Veilwardens teach that the Sundering was the inevitable consequence of treating magic as a resource to be exploited rather than a living system to be tended. The Empire didn't fail because of Valdris — Valdris was the Empire's failure made flesh.

The Ashen Court will hear none of this. To them, the Empire was the greatest achievement of civilization, brought low by treachery. Restoration is a moral duty.

The Driftborn have the simplest view: it's over, it's gone, stop arguing over its corpse and look at the sky you're floating in.
